چکیده

An analytical model for the initial growth period of the planar Richtmyer–Meshkov instability is presented for the case of a reflected shock, which corresponds in general to light-to-heavy interactions. The model captures the main features of the interfacial perturbation growth before the regime with linear growth in time is attained. The analysis provides a characteristic time scale for the startup phase of the instability, expressed explicitly as a function of the perturbation wavenumber k, the algebraic transmitted and reflected shock speeds US1 0 and US2 0 defined in the frame of the accelerated interface , and the postshock Atwood number A+: = 1−A+ /US2 + 1+A + / −US1 / 2k . Results are compared with computations obtained from two-dimensional highly resolved numerical simulations over a wide range of incident shock strengths S and preshock Atwood ratios A. An interesting observation shows that, within this model, the amplitude of small perturbations across a light-to-heavy interface evolves quadratically in time and not linearly in the limit A→1−. © 2009 American Institute of Physics. Non-linear dynamics of the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability in supernovae

We report analytical and numerical solutions describing the evolution of the coherent structure of bubbles and spikes in the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability in supernovae. It is shown that the dynamics of the flow is essentially non-local, and the nonlinear Richtmyer-Meshkov bubble flattens and decelerates.

Quantitative Theory of Richtmyer-meshkov Instability in Three Dimensions

A material interface between two fluids of different density accelerated by a shock wave is unstable. This instability is known as Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instability. Previous theoretical and numerical studies primarily focused on fluids in two dimensions. In this paper, we present the studies of RichtmyerMeshkov instability in three dimensions in rectangular coordinates. There are three main r...

The Richtmyer-meshkov Instability

■ Abstract The Richtmyer-Meshkov instability arises when a shock wave interacts with an interface separating two different fluids. It combines compressible phenomena, such as shock interaction and refraction, with hydrodynamic instability, including nonlinear growth and subsequent transition to turbulence, across a wide range of Mach numbers. This review focuses on the basic physical processes ...

Richtmyer - Meshkov instability in a spherical target with density variation

The motion of unstable fluid interface due to Richtmyer Meshkov (RM) instability incorporating with density variation has been studied in a spherical target using Lagrangian formulation. During the compression in Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) process, the density of deuterium tritium (DT) fuel increases 1000 times greater than the density of gaseous DT fuel within the core of spherical targ...

Evaluation of the Dynamic Yield Strength of Solids by Means of the Richtmyer-Meshkov Instability

An experimental procedure to evaluate the dynamic yield strength of solids based on measuring the growth of the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability is proposed. To induce the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability in solids a shock is needed, so this technique is complementary to the one based on the Rayleigh-Taylor instability that is achieved by means of an isentropic compression. We have presented an analy...
